Families are invited to join the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1,000-book goal in three years and provide children essential early literacy skills.
Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.
The library is here to support you through this challenge!
- The first step is to register by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
- As you reach each reading milestone, 250 books read, 500 books read, 750 books read and 1000 books read, come celebrate at the library and claim your prize. Prizes are awarded one per family and the number of participants is limited.
Need a way to record the books? Download the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten free app, use the provided reading log forms or create your own keepsake reading journal. Even if your child wants to hear the same book again and again, you can count it each time or visit the library and read 1,000 unique books for free.
The concept is simple, but the reward is priceless – you can do it!
