6/22 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. Master Gardeners: Growing Microgreens in a Mason Jar – Master Gardener Lori Jo Showalter will teach a class on growing microgreens in a Mason jar. Microgreens are vegetable greens, harvested after sprouting. Class participants will make their own seed sprouting jar and be given seeds to start their first windowsill micro-garden.
6/24 6:00-7:45 P.M. Meet the Colonel! – Local Artist Beth Ann O’Connell will share how she designed and created Colonel Hartley the Bison, mascot of the West End Library.
6/27 6:00-7:45 P.M. Cooking with Friends – Our cooking group selects a recipe from a cookbook at the library, then prepares a dish to share. Visit the library to select a recipe for our next gathering.

Bootlegging Women: Mary Gill and Laura WimbushThis talk compares the lives of two women who were married to notorious bootleggers in the Prohibition Era. Mary Gill, of West Beaver Township, Snyder County, and Laura Wimbush, of Campbell County, Virginia, both came into the spotlight when their husbands’ whiskey operations were raided by police. I compare their trajectories to show what everyday life was like for rural women in the 1920s and how the illegal booze trade intersected with “back mountain” ways of living.

1. During the week of July 8 to 13 – design a space suit.
2. During the week of July 15 to 20 – learn 3 Russian words or phrases.

Bike Helmet Safety – At Discover time we will learn about Bike Helmet Safety. Parents should bring in their children’s bike helmets to have them checked to see if they fit properly.
7/1 to 7/6 During Library Hours Make a Space Globe – Like to have some sparkly space age fun? Children are welcome to make a Space Globe. 
7/2 10:30-11:30 A.M. Sun’s Out…Kids Out – Summer is a great time for playing outside but it also caries with it some safety hazards. This educational program is geared to helping children understand summer safety, so they can focus on fun.
7/8 to 7/13 During Library Hours Design a Space Suit *Requirement to earn an Astronaut Patch
7/9 10:30-11:30 A.M. Poison Prevention – Some medicines look like candy and some poisons look like drinks. Children will learn to Stop! and ask first before eating or drinking anything that they are not sure are food. This program takes place at pre-school Discover time.

7/23 10:30-11:30 A.M. Heart Power – You can have a healthy heart, it’s as easy as 1, 2, and 3! This program teaches children about the heart and how to keep it healthy for a lifetime.
7/30 10:30-11:30 A.M. Vision Screening and Education Session – During Discover, Central Susquehanna Sight Service provides vision screenings for children (ages 2 to 6). Eye screening via the Spot Vision Screener quickly and easily detects vision issues. $1.00 charge per individual.
8/6 10:30-11:30 A.M. My Plate – Before you eat, think about what goes on your plate. This program teaches the basic food groups, proper serving sizes, and nutritional information for kids.

Learn how to stargaze from your own backyard, and use the library’s telescopes to practice with a professional. This program will be held after regular library hours. All ages welcome.

LED Paper Circuit Constellation MakerSPACE – Create your favorite constellation or star sign using LED lights. Build STEM skills and your understanding of electricity.  All ages welcome.
7/2 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Locked in the UPSIDE DOWN Escape Room – Grab your baseball bats and blinking lights to escape the Upside Down in a technology-based escape room. Follow clues featuring lab experiments and test your knowledge of 80s culture to solve the mysteries of THINGS that are STRANGER than they seem. Registration is set up for groups of 4-8 for a half hour slot. Participation is very limited so register to attend. Ages 13+

4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Make a 3D Alien – Explore a universe of stories by creating your very own 3D alien! Printing of the aliens will occur after the program. Participants will be called to pick up their aliens once printed.

Parent/Child Workshop (aka ABC Play with Me)
The library is hosting ‘A…B…C… Play with Me,’ a five-week parent/child workshop for children ages 14-40 months and their parents. During each session, the library provides a setting in which the child and parent can work and play together. A local professional introduces the parent to some of the many local resources available to help them in the rewarding, but challenging, task of parenting a toddler.
7/11 10 A.M. – 7 P.M. Lego Drop-In – Drop-In between 10-7 for some Space Themed Lego STEAM Challenges or just to build your own Space Themed Lego creations.
7/17 2:00 – 3:30 P.M. We Have Lift Off! – Explore, build, and launch rockets. This will be both an indoor and outdoor activity. Please dress accordingly. Ages 5-12 * MUST Pre-Register!
